Hi Friends! I was cleaning out my pantry and came across the old canisters I’ve had for about 15 years. Instead of throwing them out, I came up with a perfect DIY repurposed kitchen canister idea!
Lately, I’ve enjoyed cooking with herbs, so I’ve decided to turn the old kitchen canisters into a mini herb garden. My canisters will finally serve a purpose and look beautiful at the same time!
Having fresh herbs to cook at my disposal sounds merely fantastic. Win, win!
Ok, ok, I know what you’re thinking, “You don’t have a green thumb”? :$
Be that as it may, I’ve done my research, and besides, the herbs will be cooked up before I have a chance to destroy them! I can easily plant more. π
I can look at it this way.
Firstly, I love to use fresh herbs with my meals. Secondly, I don’t want to throw away my kitchen canisters. And, lastly, the canisters will add beauty to my kitchen. Sounds like a win, win, win to me!
I’ve already talked myself into this snazzy DIY repurposed kitchen canister idea.
So, if you have some old kitchen canisters in your pantry or countertop, and are ready to transform yours into an indoor herb garden, let get to it!
This DIY Repurposed Kitchen Canister project only took an hour to complete and was under 20 bucks! SCORE!

STEP 1-4 REPURPOSED Kitchen Canisters
STEP 1 & 2: Gather all of the supplies needed for the canister transformation.
STEP 3: Drill two holes on the bottom of the canisters to allow the water to drain correctly, by using a diamond tip bit, drill and a small amount of water to get a clean cut hole while drilling the holes.
- Cordless Drill [I used Black & Decker]
- Diamond Tip Bit
STEP 4: I washed the canisters thoroughly to ensure they are free of dust and debris, let them sit to dry completely.
I taped the seal with painters tape and spray painted them using RUST-OLEUM Painters Touch Paint+Primer in Heirloom White.
STEP 5-8 REPURPOSED Kitchen Canisters
STEP 5: Remove the backing of the canister lid. I used a hammer to pop it out and placed the lid back on the canisters.
If your canisters don’t have a removable lid, remove the lid entirely. They won’t be needed. I’m using mine just for the added pop of character.
STEP 6: Distress the paint on the canisters by using a small piece of sandpaper. Start from the top and work your way down, using gentle wiping strokes.
I didn’t want the canisters looking too brand new, this technique is my favorite for distressing my makes.
STEP 7: To get started, start planting the herbs by placing the garden soil in the canisters to the midway mark of the canisters, then place the herb plant on top, and top it off with more dirt and water.
I’m no expert at planting herbs. If you know a better, or proper way to plant your . please do that. LOL π [it worked great for me]
STEP 8: You’re done! All that’s left to do is admire your new indoor herb garden and start planning your next meal, using your herbs.
I have to say I think this DIY repurposed kitchen canister project turned out pretty snazzy, don’t you agree? I. LOVE. IT.
And guess what? My herbs didn’t die, I actually did it! I may not be a master gardener by any means, however; I am proud of myself.
Because I enjoyed this project so much, this crazy lady [me] went all out and created another project with herbs, check it out here.
