INGREDIENTS
- 5-6 Pieces or [family Pack] Legs quarters Dark meat adds more flavor.
- 4 Quarts Water
- 1 Cup Diced Celery
- 1 Cup Diced Carrots
- 4 Cups Chopped Cabbage
- 1 Medium Yellow Onion
- ¼ tsp Coarse Black Pepper
- 2 TBSP Chicken Boullion
- ¼ Cup Parsley
- 1-2 tsp Salt Optional
- ¼ tsp Onion Powder
- ¼ tsp Celery Salt
- 1 Fresh Sage Leaf Optional
STEP 1-4 How To Make Homemade Chicken Broth
STEP 1: Gather all of the ingredients. Prep celery, carrots onion, and sage leaf set aside.
STEP 2: Chop the cabbage, and set aside.
STEP 3: Place the chicken with the skin on, and place it in an 8-quart cooking pot, and add the water. Set the heat to medium-high heat.
STEP 4: Now, add celery, carrots, onion, cabbage, and sage, then mix well.
STEP 5-8 How To Make Homemade Chicken Broth
STEP 5: Next, add the black pepper, onion powder, celery salt, chicken bouillon, parsley, and salt, then mix well.
STEP 6: Set the heat to medium-high, and cook the broth to a full boil.
Then, reduce the heat to a simmer, and cover for 1 hour 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Simmer longer for more flavor.
STEP 7: Remove from heat, let stand 5 minutes. Remove chicken and vegetables from the pot, dispose of the sage leaves. Store the chicken and vegetables for tomorrow night’s dinner in the refrigerator.
STEP 8: Serve yourself a warm bowl of homemade chicken broth, top your broth with salt, pepper, and parsley and enjoy!
Store the chicken broth in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
*TIP FOR LOW FAT
Refrigerate the chicken broth overnight.
After the chicken broth is chilled, you’ll notice a layer of hardened fat on the top layer of the broth. Simply scoop off the fat with a spoon and dispose of it.
Personally, I leave the fat in, as it gives it more flavor.
HOW DO YOU HEAT UP THE CHICKEN BROTH?
MICROWAVE: Using a microwave; from the refrigerator, pour some broth in a bowl and heat for 1 minute and 30 seconds, stir, and repeat for another 1 minute and 30 seconds. Do not add water.
STOVE TOP: Pour soup in a small pot and simmer for 10 minutes to your desired temperature. Do not add water.
CAN YOU FREEZE THE HOMEMADE CHICKEN BROTH?
Yes, you can freeze the homemade chicken broth in a freezer-safe dish, or freezer-safe baggie. The leftover broth is perfect for future recipes that require chicken broth. It’s a win, win, win!
To thaw the chicken broth, place in the refrigerator overnight.

- Mix well.
- Turn heat on to medium / high until boiling. Reduce heat to medium / Low
- Cover, stirring occasionally for 1 hour and 10 minutes.
- Remove from heat, let stand 5 minutes.
- Remove chicken from pot, dispose of the sage leaves.
- Properly cool chicken and store in the refrigerator immediately, for another meal
- Remove vegetables from pot, cool and store in the refrigerator, for another meal.
- Properly store broth in the refrigerator.
- Top with pepper, enjoy!
